Of Kiwis and Kayaks

March 1st
Yesterday was the first BBQ of the year with my housemates. Before Rich and I headed out to Tescos for some supplies for the bonfire, Alec gave me a pound to get something to surprise him – I guess it was to try to get me to be more decisive which is something that I get teased about quite a bit. At the supermarket though trying to find something that Alec would like for a pound was mind boggling. After a good ten minutes or so trying to figure out bits and bobs that might be under a pound I spotted a carton of kiwis which fit the bill in being exactly a pound and ready to eat. Upon return home Alec was pleasantly surprised and turned out he likes kiwis but rarely buys them- success! When he asked me what was the lesson learned I replied, “you like kiwis”… I may or may not have missed the point.
The BBQ was lovely, I had a bratwurst, a courgette (zucchini), and a little bit of green bell pepper. It was delicious. We stayed out by the fire telling jokes or just laughing in general. At one point, Rich and Alec were making me laugh so much that I nearly had coca cola come out my nose! It was quite painful and I did learn one lesson that evening- don’t drink or eat when laughing.

Today, I managed to make it on the crowded U6C bus down to the NOC by 9am where we learned about RuBisCo and its function in photosynthesis and chemosynthesis in my Marine Molecular Biology class. After class, Kerstin and I went to the American store called ‘Uncle Charlie’s’ in hopes of purchasing some decent marshmallows, a Hershey’s bar, and some graham crackers so that way the next time my housemates and I have a bonfire we could make s’mores properly. Typical, good old ‘Uncle Charlie’s’ had nothing that I wanted not even a rocky road bar. I ended up getting an overpriced Butterfinger to compensate for the lack of s’mores and rocky road goodness. On my way back it was warm and gorgeous outside. Rich and I decided to spend the afternoon in the sun kayaking up the river Itchen by Riverside Park. It was gorgeous outside and really fun, though I am still trying to get the knack for going in a straight line without the use of a rudder.
It’s starting to feel more and more like Spring- and I love it!
